Non-Koreans are not able to purchase bullet train tickets online for the SRT because its website requires domestic credit cards and a national ID number, and does not offer an English page.
The SRT, a high-speed train connecting Suseo Station in southern Seoul with major cities such as Busan and Gwangju, has been in operation since December 2016. But still it does not offer online booking services for foreign travelers.
The SRT ticket-purchasing website is available only in Korean. The online payment process requires a Korean ID number and does not accept foreign credit cards.
Korail, the national railroad operator with a 41 percent stake in SR, opened an English-language website at the same time it opened the Korean one. The Korail site then began accepting credit cards issued overseas starting in 2004.
An SRT spokesperson admitted the website fails to meet the needs of foreign travelers.
"We are currently developing an English site with a foreign credit card payment system. We expect it to be available by the second half of this year," the spokesperson said.
Foreign travelers who want to book train tickets in advance must buy them on-site or via a travel agency at a hotel.
Seventy-five percent of all foreign visitors to Korea in 2016 came independently rather than as part of a travel agency tour group, according to the Korea Culture & Tourism Institute.
The inconveniences foreigners face when booking inter-city train tickets make it harder for the nation's foreign-based tourism to spread beyond Seoul.
"It's really frustrating even for someone like me, who has much more practice with Korean than the average foreigner," said Sophia Kim, an American exchange student currently living in Seoul.
Kim said she also had trouble with other transportation booking sites in Korea because they only accept domestic credit cards.
"I just give up trying to buy tickets and sometimes just cancel the trip," she said. "I think it definitely hinders possible tourism prospects."
The SRT mobile app launched an English version last month but it still does not accept credit cards issued outside the country.
